Year 1

What is FIRST Lego League?

FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. FIRST LEGO League participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together. In FIRST LEGO League, students engage in hands-on STEM experiences, building confidence, growing their knowledge and developing habits of learning. FIRST LEGO League’s three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

Our robot, Tabs

This is our robot, Tabs. She helped us complete over eight missions, bringing us closer to success. She has been training for this next year.

Our innovation, the Simigly Sleeve

The theme this year was power, so we came up with a solution that saves power, called the Simigly Sleeve. It is a solution that wraps around the power lines and keeps the energy in, because it escapes through the rubber because of the heat that the energy makes. Our solution involves coating the power lines in Mika, Glycol, and Silicone. The Mika is the first material. It surrounds the power lines to protect it from the second material, the Glycol. Glycol is a watery substance that heats up really quickly, so the heat expelled from the power lines heats up the Glycol, which is contained by the Silicone, which is the third material. Then the lines go to houses and transfer the Glycol to the water heaters, where it goes into a pocket and the heated up Glycol heats up the water, thus saving people money from having to heat their water. This saves 65% of energy. It is called the Simigly Sleeve, because Si is for Silicone, mi is for the Mika, and gly is for the Glycol.

Core Values

To boost our core values, we thanked the volunteer judges and referees every time we saw them. We also used as much teamwork as possible, because that is one of the core values. In fact, our hard work payed off when we got second place in core values in the Regionals tournament. We even got a trophy, which you can see in the picture to the right.

Robot Design

Here you see us doing the robot game at the tournament. You can not see all of the missions, but we did nine out of the fifteen. We did the hydro plant, orange hand, we did the solar panels, we did the wind turbine, and here you see our robot Tabs doing the watch television mission. If you would like to learn more about the missions, go to the FIRST Lego League website. The missions that you can’t see that we did is the dinosaur toy, power plant, innovation circle, and the energy units in the innovation circle. For our robot, we did the Basic Driving Base 1. Our robot Tabs was amazing, and our best score was 215 points. Our worst score was 155.
